THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED

A ten dollar bill was handed to the owner of a restaurant who gave change back to the man whose hand was already in his pocket, pulling out a pack of cigarettes, and calculating, subconsciously, the number of steps that lay between him and the door. Under steam, four paces from the exit, the Zippo clanked open and by the time he shouldered the door he was simultaneously smoking and nearly knocking over an old man. On the street, apologies made, he walks past a woman thinking very hard about her cats at home, who weren’t thinking about her at all. Laying in wait for her at the grocery store was a small boy, delighted to discover he can talk through his hands, and sharing this with all around. The boy’s father was lost in thought in front of the frozen food case, suddenly cataloguing movies in his mind. The memories of his relationships with women are marked by movies, at three stages:
1. Seeing the movie with the woman
2. Noticing that the movie is out on video, later
3. Happening upon the movie on TV, later still
